Kristol Bums Conservatives with NYT Exit
By Kevin McCauley
In what could have been a bleak day for conservatives, the indispensable Washington Times gallantly rose to the occasion to fill the huge void left in many hearts following news that Bill Kristol is finito at the New York Times.
Big Bill’s departure effectively kills any national aspiration held by his darling, Sarah Palin, who must be shedding moose tears.
The "master of the obvious" used his swan song piece to inform readers that liberals count on Barack Obama to come through big time. “If not, the country will to open to conservative alternatives,” Kristol huffed. Duh!
He then mysteriously added: “We don’t really know how Barack Obama will govern.”
A glance at the front page of today’s NYT offers more than a clue. It notes that Obama's repudiation of Team Bush's decision to squash improved vehicle mileage standards bolsters the “impression of a sharp break from the Bush era on all fronts, following his decisions last week to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; tighten limits on interrogation tactics by Central Intelligence Agency officers; order plans to withdraw combat forces from Iraq; and reverse President Bush’s financing restrictions on groups that promote or provide abortion overseas, Administration officials said.”
The Times missed some of my favorites, such as removing restrictions on the Freedom of Information Act and banning Administration officials from lobbying the Obama White House as long as he is in office.
Maybe Kristol — giddy from either meeting Obama at George Will’s house last week or the Inaugural pageantry — missed those moves by the new Administration, a White House that has moved at lightning speed during its six-day reign.
Here is some good news for Bill and his gang. The WashTimes is offering a special pre-order discount on “W, The Legacy of George W. Bush,” which it calls a “compelling coffee table styled book about an extraordinary President in turbulent times.” The paper sent an email today, saying “W” is filled with “gripping pictures” (Bush reading "The Pet Goat" to school kids as the World Trade Center is attacked? Bush gazing from his airplane at a drowned New Orleans? Bush standing with a turkey prop during a Thanksgiving Day fly-in to Baghdad Airport? Or the “mother of all photos:” “Mission Accomplished?)
This “historical keepsake presentation of all eight years of the Presidency of George W. Bush,” is available from the WashTimes for $24.99, which is a $10 discount.
It’s too bad by birthday just past.
