It’s not clear how Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is going to achieve his most important goal of making Barack Obama a one-term president.

The heartless GOP, led by Private Ryan in the House, wants to cut $260B in domestic spending to shield the Pentagon from automatic budget cuts at the end of the year. Those programs include food stamps, Medicaid and the child tax credit.

Even the GOP cheerleader Wall Street Journal today reported the severity of the slashing, pointing out that Ryan’s plan would strip funding from the “Meals on Wheels” program. Geez, that’s way over the top.

The rampage continued today as the GOP blocked a Democratic bill to prevent the doubling of interest rates on student loans. Without Senate action, the interest rate will rise to 6.8 percent on July 1.

Affecting millions of students and parents, the hike is a political gift to president Obama in the run-up to the November election. Republicans blocked the measure because they don’t like the Democratic plan to fund the extension of the student loan program by tinkering with tax law that allows the super-wealthy to avoid paying Social Security and Medicare taxes. Instead, it wants to raid Obamacare, a program that benefits the rest of America.

McConnell made a lame statement on the Senate floor today, accusing the Democrats of failing to work with Republicans.
“Solving the problem isn’t what this is about for Senate Democrats and the White House they’re coordinating with. Finding a solution to this problem isn’t difficult. What’s difficult is getting Democrats to agree to it in an election year. For them, it’s about putting the other party on the spot,” said the Senator from Kentucky.

That’s beyond rich from somebody who declared ousting the president as issue No. 1 shortly after he took over the Oval Office. Obama tried cooperation. It didn’t work. In fact, it nearly killed his presidency.

More from McConnell:
“Separation of Powers notwithstanding, the Democrats’ top message man recently admitted that Senate Democrats and the White House are ‘attached at the hip’. Meaning, of course, that the Senate has ceased to be a place where problems are resolved. It’s become instead a place where Democrats produce campaign material.”

McConnell said the real issue beyond today’s vote is that half of college graduates can’t find a decent job. His solution seems to be to keep the truly needy out of school.

One thing is for sure: McConnell maintained a straight face when he bashed the Democrats. If he could crack a smile once in a while, people would think it is all just a joke.

A very bad one.
