Dancing his way into August's political theater of the absurd is former Republican Majority Leader Tom "The Hammer" DeLay, who has launched a major reputational redemption tour by announcing plans to compete next month on the reality show, "Dancing with the Stars."
Conservatives have had plenty of fun this month. It has been a blast. They have turned healthcare meetings throughout the land into theaters of the absurd, messing things up by trotting in seniors who claim to be scared to death about standing before one of President Obama's death panels. Grannies are groomed to "just say 'no'" to health reform, bringing tears of joy to DeLay's former GOP teammate Dick Armey, who pulls the strings at FreedomWorks, organizer of the town hall shoot-outs.
You got to hand it to the Republicans. They are sticking it to the "way too cool for school" Team Obama, which doesn't appear to know which side is up. Note to Team O: your facts-based argument about healthcare reform (or the U.S. goes bust) is taking a royal beating by the emotional outburst of seniors, some of whom are bussed in as “ringers” to disrupt the Congressional town halls.
White House backbone is missing in action. Obama's misguided outreach to the "never budge an inch" Republican party has brought him nothing but discredit. He is squandering big Democratic majorities in the House and Senate. Instead Obama caves, jettisoning things such as the "public option" to private insurance, which is a deal-breaker among the "progressive" wing of the Democrats. Obama’s reluctance to use his majorities reminds one of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright who once chided then-Army chief of staff Colin Powell by saying "What's the point of having this superb military you're always talking about, if we can't use it?"
The last hope for the Democrats: a "Dancing with the Stars" healthcare dance-off between DeLay, a polka, waltz, country swing and disco guy, against Barry's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, a trained ballerina. Rahm is a guy who can go toe-to-toe with The Hammer.
