Tynan Sits in PR Purgatory |
By Greg Hazley |
|
Ronan Tynan is trapped in PR purgatory.
The Irish tenor, known to New Yorkers (and nationally) for his booming renditions of "God Bless America" from Yankees games and other public events, took a beating in the press in October when he says a joking remark made in his apartment building led to him being branded an anti-semite.
After the New York tabloids ran with the story, Tynan lost his Yankees gig and several others. In an interview with New York magazine, apparently his first since the scandal, Tynan said he is considering packing up his New York home and moving back to Ireland.
Whether the events that led to his ostracism warrant his current status, the question is, if he still hasn't recovered by January 2010, can Tynan ever fix his image?
That will likely require the warm embrace of the Yankees as well as a strong vote of confidence from a prominent figure like Mayor Mike Bloomberg or even former President George W. Bush. The Yankees should ditch the overly image-conscious routine that is more akin to their cross-town rivals, the PR-paranoid Mets.
Tynan's efforts for firefighters in the aftermath of 9/11 alone should be the basis for a second chance. |
