The spokesperson for Andersen, the embattled Enron auditor,
took issue with a report on National Public Radio today that
the firm is trying to muzzle employees in the wake of the
Enron affair.
Charlie Leonard, partner at Gavin Anderson's Chlopak, Leonard,
Schechter and Assocs., said that is simply not the case. He
told this website that Andersen is encouraging dialog with
the media.
"We have responded to 343 media inquiries," he
said. The idea of the memo was to control the information
flow about Enron.
Staffers were told that Andersen's national media relations
team was to handle questions about Enron.
Leonard earned his crisis stripes as deputy campaign manager
of the Perot for President Committee, a post that he held
until Perot bowed out of the 1992 race. Ketchum/Chicago is
still doing PR for Anderson, according to that office's director,
Mike Hatcliffe.
Meanwhile, Rep. Jim Greenwood, head of the House Energy and
Commerce oversight subcommittee, has begun his probe into
Enron/Andersen. He said document shredding at Andersen was
more widespread than at first thought.
Greenwood claims up to 80 people in the auditor's Houston
office were involved in destroying Enron documents.
