SDI RALLIES SUPPORT FOR TROOPS

Susan Davis International, Washington, D.C., is handling the Pentagon's "America Supports You" campaign to drum up support for the nearly 150,000 U.S. forces that may be occupying Iraq during the next four years.

Sec. Rumsfeld presented an ASY dog tag to Bill O'Reilly on Fox News.

President Bush plugged the ASY program today during his speech before Marines and their families at Camp Pendleton, Calif. He urged the audience to visit the ASY website that talks about the way the homefront is showing support for the troops that are leading the fight in Bush's "war on terror."

Said the President: "Americans are coming together to surround our deployed forces and wounded warriors with love and support. And we should be doing more."

The ASY site features stories about programs, such as "Hugs from Home," in which participants "adopt" soldiers by writing and sending care packages. It also has downloadable ASY logos that people can affix to tee-shirts, water bottles, hats, etc.

The ASY campaign, which has received coverage on CNN, "Live with Regis and Kelly," and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," got a PR boost from Defense Secretary Don Rumsfeld on Dec. 2 when he presented an ASY dog tag to Bill O'Reilly during his interview on Fox News' "The O'Reilly Factor."

Rumsfeld rewarded O'Reilly and his program for "being a terrific supporter of our troops."

GOPlease (12/08):
You have to love you libs (see below) feigning interest in the troops -- right until they let you know that -- in overwhelming numbers, they support this war and this President. Then, you all go slinking away ...

Thinkman2 responds to GOPlease (12/08):
Everyone in his right mind cares about our citizens in harm's way, and it has not one thing to do with political philosophy.

Putting them there is another subject, and the fallacies that did it are totally irrelevant to concerns for their safety. If one needs to hang a political smear on everything, that is both a right and his privilege -- the Constitution guarantees it. But we should not mix the concern for our troops and the facts that expose daily the inadequacy of their armor (see 12/8 NYT and the harsh response to a legitimate question from a soldier) and other factors.

If GOPlease and his friends believe the troops are in fine shape, they're levitating on Mars.

PR Honcho (12/08):
"Support the troops" really means "support our failed Iraq war and support our failed troop deployment strategy". This from the same White House that has hung the military and their families out to dry. Shameful.

If you looked closely at the Marines behind Bush at his photo op yesterday at Camp Pendleton, you'll notice very few of them were applauding. And in Iraq today, these words of wisdom from the architect of the Iraq debacle:

(From AP) Disgruntled U.S. soldiers complained to Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Wednesday about the lack of armor for their vehicles and long deployments, drawing a blunt retort from the Pentagon chief.

"You go to war with the Army you have,'' he said in a rare public airing of rank-and-file concerns among the troops.

GOPlease responds to PR Honcho (12/08):
Check your beloved polls (or are they not so beloved since they showed your candidate winning handily before the votes were in?? ):

The U.S. Armed Forces supported President Bush over the Flip-Flopper by a 2-1 margin.

And, if you want unhappy faces, look at every member of the DNC, Terry McAwful, Nancy Pelosi (when her facelift wears off) and many "Bush bashing" voters on the day after election day.

In addition, I would hazard a guess that another unhappy face is Kevin McCauley's, as he's been strangely silent since ... Election Day!

PR Honcho responds to GOPlease (12/09):
You know, when Bush won, I thought you might show a side we haven't seen before here ... magnanimous in victory. But [that didn't happen].

Everyone I know, liberal or conservative, supports the troops. It's just that we're tired of seeing them blown to bits because Dubya & Rummy rushed to war and sent them to Iraq insufficiently armed and protected.

GOPlease responds to Honcho (12/09):
Magnanimous in victory, huh? Just like the Flip-Flopper, NYT and the rest of you screaching weasals who went right back into campaign mode as soon as the election was over.

To wit:

Kerry's e-mail message to supporters about the "right wing agenda" (so much for telling President Bush about "the need for healing")

The blatant despicable racist caricatures and demeanig of Condi Rice. Of course, you have to trash Condi and Alberto Gonzales, because the GOP is the only party that actually appoints minorities to positions of power in the Executive branch.

Non-stop exploiting of our men and women in uniform to advance your political agenda (see Drudge today)

Etc.

Etc.

I don't think so. We have a mandate and we're going to use it. Buckle up for our Supreme Court nominees. And tax reform. And Social Security reform. And tort reform. And rolling back these gay marriage attempts. And stripping the NAACP of their tax-exempt status for their blatant electioneering.

And, you guys can go right ahead and make Howard "Meltdown" Dean your DNC chair and nominate Hillary in '08. I can't wait ...

Invictus responds to PR Honcho (12/08):
Honcho, that must have been the same news conference at which Rumsfeld said of Iraq, "a lot of things are going awfully well."

Sure, Rummy, and a lot of other things are going awfully awful, such as the insurgents'Vietnamization of the war and the failing election strategy.

Live with it, boys. You broke it; it's yours for a long, long time.

Invictus (12/07):
That's fine unless those dog tags come home wrapped around your toes, as is happening with increasing frequency these days. As is the return of reservists to Iraq during the holiday season to fight a war without a timetable or an exit strategy.

I hope those tags are made of durable material, because we will be in Iraq for years to come. It is the albatross around the lame duck's neck.

Thinkman2 (12/07):
Wait a minute. Why on earth would any of us NOT support the troops in Iraq or anywhere else?

Let us not confuse our concerns for our forces everywhere with the policies and people who put them there? That is the problem.

Every person who wears the American uniform deserves our support. But what does it say when most of those who deployed them are draft deferees of other times and the bottom of the barrel is being scraped to dig out people who already have honorable discharges and deploy them abroad?

Please let us approach this with propriety and truth. Our service men and women deserve that much and more.
