Ivory Coast strongman Laurent Gbagbo wants Lanny Davis, who resigned the account Dec. 30, to return $200K of the $300K that he spent in trying to prove that Gbagbo is the duly elected president of the African nation.
Gbagbo, who lost a Nov. 28 election, has been fending off calls from the United Nations, U.S. and African community, to step down. The U.S. reportedly offered to re-settle Gbagbo here.
Leaders of four African countries—Kenya, Benin, Sierra Leone and Cape Verde—are currently in the Ivory Coast to persuade him to leave the office or face military intervention.
Davis, who was President Clinton's legal counselor, was paid $300K upfront for the three-month job.
He says a team at Lanny Davis & Associates worked "round the clock" for Gbagbo and that most of the money has already been spent.
