wes pedersen (4/12):
This smacks of a back-room deal between the two candidates in which Romney made promises we will all regret if he wins.
Santorum's bow out has all the earmarks of a brokered deal. The one question: Is the deal now sewed up for Santorum to be placed at the absolute top of Romney's list of potential running mates?
[email protected] (4/12):
You may be correct, Joe. Who knows? But I don't see Rick as a VP candidate. Mitt has the conservative vote locked up. They have no where to go but to him. I think he'll pick a more moderate VP; someone who will appeal to independents and Hispanic voters. I base my "evaluation" on my numerous conversations with "those who know" during my days of working on state, congressional and presidential campaigns, and my still being a political junkie. But I never forget that if all the political advisers were correct, no candidate would ever lose an election.
Joe Honick, GMA International Ltd (4/19):
To both Wes and Arthur, the one question never raised or explored during a nominating campaign is "Who comes with the nominee and the winner if elected? The vice presidency potential is one prize....others to satisfy or at least recognize powerful political wings includes the State Department(see Hillary) or other key cabinet promises. As Wes notes, the "back room" is often more crowded with the 'auctioning' of deals than elsewhere.
Kevin Foley (4/19):
I agree with you, Joe, such is Santorum's tone deafness. He suspended the campaign because he was about to get squashed in the Pennsylvania primary where he lost his senate seat by double digits. The good folks of the Keystone State had all they could stand of Slick Rick already.
Having avoided that embarrassment, like Gingrich, he'll hang around to see if he has some pull at the convention and maybe get himself a cabinet posting in the event Romney wins the general. But I think Romney has it in for him. How else to explain the "loser" label Mitt stuck on Santorum in an ad that ran throughout Pennsylvania just before Santorum quit the raise?
Thanks for playing, Rick, now now bend over for a swift kick in the shorts!
Joe Honick, GMA International Ltd (4/20):
When I noted "who comes along with a candidate", I had not yet learned that the chief financier for the SWIFT BOST smear campaign against John Kerry to the tune of $4.4 million...has also kicked in over $2million to the Mitt Romney campaign. The name is Bob Perry, Texas developer. He also kicked in lots for Mitt in 2008. Only the most naive would suggest Perry to be a moderate, given that his Swift Boater liars had to settle for more than $300,000 with the Federal Election Commission. Whst now, Mitt?
Kathy Lewton (4/20):
The only thing that could increase the women's vote gap between Obama and Romney to an even higher percentage for the president would be putting Santorum on the GOP ticket. Contraception is "not right?" Sex WITHIN MARRIAGE should be for procreation ONLY??
Add to that his utterly hateful comments about gays and lesbians, his "makes me vomit" comment about JFK, and his obsession with making government submissive to religion (HIS religion of course) . . . . and his "learn to speak English" advice to Hispanic citizens . . . Exactly what would Santorum bring to Romney's attempt to get voters to VOTE for him when the majority already have unfavorable impressions of him? Solidify the far right wing, anti-women, anti-minority, anti-LGBT "base" while driving away members of those groups and independent voters and moderate voters and sensible GOPers?? OK apparently you think he's "handsome," Joe (every woman I know finds him repugnant -- his political views transcend a pretty face), but I think a lot of voters look beyond looks to substance and policy issues.
But we need more than a couple of male model types to lead our country through troubled times.
Joe Honick, GMA International Ltd (4/24):
Kathy, your concerns are legitimate, BUT don't give the apathetic voting public too much credit. I could of course be wrong on Santorum for feep, BUT as well, the far right of the GOP will demand of Romney some 'goodies' and promises if they get him elected. The question of what ransom he's willing to offer for support has gone virtually unanswered, thus it is no surprise to the another couple of million from someone like the guy who financed the Swift Boat smear campaign.
Joe Honick, GMA International Ltd (5/09):
Anyone notice that Santorum has reappeared with a sudden repatriation of his old opinion of Romney....you know Romney who had to meet in top secret fashion with right wing media last week lest someone discover he just has s nice smile? |
