Robin Pence left Gannett after three years for the VP of PR role at Choice Hotels International in March.
The McLean, Va., media giant, which owns USA Today and The Arizona Republic, among 82 newspapers and 23 TV stations, said Gaines, as VP, will play a key role in “explaining Gannett’s path forward.”
He starts May 21 reporting to CMO Maryam Banikarim.
Gaines was at MSNBC for 14 years in various roles after working in media relations for the Clinton White House.
Gannett implemented large staff cuts over the past seven years and continues to streamline its operations as news transitions to digital.
First quarter net income fell 25 percent amid a continued decline in newspaper advertising. Revenues fell 2.6% to $1.22B, although TV and digital revenue increased.
