El Segudno, the California city named after a Standard Oil refinery and home to Fortune 500 companies like Mattel, Oracle and Xerox, is turning to outside PR help reverse a decline in business and economic development activity.

el segundoThe city, which harbors several large aserospace companies, took its latest corporate hit in May when Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems said it would move its El Segundo headquarters staff of about 170 to McKinney, Tex., under a wider reorganization.

"Despite El Segundo's office vacancy rates decreasing … recent losses with aerospace contractors have impacted the city's business base," reads an RFP floated by the city this month.

The RFP calls on PR firms to pitch ways to "be both proactive and innovative in aggressively attracting, expanding and retaining its business base, while continuing to diversify its workforce."

Initial budget is $100K but the city says additional "mechanisms of funding" may be available.

Proposals are due Sept. 24. View the RPF (PDF).
