New York's Berk Communications is guiding PR for Roc Nation, the sports management joint venture between Jay-Z and Creative Artists Agency which was launched this week.
Berk is led by Ron Berkowitz, a former media relations staffer for the Yankees who was manager of publicity for FX and Fox Cable Networks before setting up his shop in 1999. He has repped Jay-Z for several years, in addition to athletes like Tiki Barber and Lawrence Taylor and a roster of corporate, entertainment and eatery/club clients.
Roc Nation caused a stir April 2 when it announced its launch with the signing of Yankees star second baseman Robinson Cano.
Cano, who left the super-agent Scott Boras and is poised to become a free agent after the season if he doesn’t extend his contract with the Yankees, said in a statement that he is ready to “take a more active role in my endeavors both on and off the field.”
Michael Levine, who co-heads CAA sports, said Jay Z and his team have successfully orchestrated “powerful brand and business-building opportunities for their clients, adding that CAA looks forward to combining its resources on behalf of top athlete clients.
