The U.S. Supreme Court's 5-4 decision today to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act was a big PR victory for at least two PR firms.

scotusSKDKnickerbocker, the New York and Washington-based firm, has guided PR for the Respect for Marriage Coalition of interest groups promoting repeal of DOMA over the past year. The coalition includes more than 80 groups chaired by Freedom to Marry and the Human Rights Campaign.

SKDK has produced issue advertising and PR efforts for the coalition, as well as more localized efforts over the past two years to support state ballot initiatives like New York's successful push in 2011.

Managing director Hilary Rosen cheered the Supreme Court's decision in a post on Twitter today: " EQUAL PROTECTION!!! We won clean and big! #DOMA."

The high court's ruling was also a victory for 83-year-old Edie Windsor, a widowed lesbian who filed the suit to challenge the DOMA law.

Windsor has been represented by Sard Verbinnen & Co for the past three years on a pro bono basis as she publicized her suit's journey through the courts and the campaign to overturn DOMA.

The Supreme Court also held today that the challengers to California's ban on gay marriage, known as Proposition 8, did not have standing to sue and sent the case back to a lower court.
