The organizing body for the 2014 International Canoe Slalom World Championships has embarked on a PR and marketing search this month to put the event in the national and global spotlight and pitch the hosting region of Maryland as a hub for adventure sports.

Deep CreekMaryland's Deep Creek 2014 bid team won hosting duties for the global competition in 2011 over bids from Vienna, Austria, and Krakow, Poland.

Commissioners for Maryland's Garrett County are leading the Deep Creek 2014 push and are overseeing production of the International Canoe Federation Event, set for Sept. 16-21, 2014 at the state's six-year-old Adventure Sports Center International mountaintop whitewater course.

Legislators approved a $1M state bond in April to support the event.

An RFP for PR and marketing support released July 27 calls for support of the event, as well as a plan to position to region as the "eastern United States epicenter and hub of adventure sports and outdoor recreation."

The competition attracts 1,500 competitors and support staff from 35 countries and will be globally televised. Maryland expects a $20M-$24M impact.

The 2013 world championships are in Prague.

Proposals are due July 30. View the RFP (PDF).
