Former Brooklyn/Staten Island Congressman Mike McMahon is handling public affairs/government relations duties for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the occupied section of Cyprus.
The Democrat is working as lead on a $200K, one-year contract won by Herrick Feinstein in New York.
Turkey invaded the northern part of the Republic of Cyprus in 1974 following a Greek Cypriot-led coup aimed to make the island part of Greece, Turkey’s historic archrival.
Another round of United Nations negotiations geared to the reunification of Cyprus resumes in October.
According to HF's contract, Team McMahon is to arrange Congressional visits to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, a state recognized only by Turkey, and promote a positive image for it in the media.
Tea Party-backed Republican Michael Grimm defeated McMahon, a former member of the House Foreign Affairs committee, in 2010.
McMahon also handled the development, and construction of Turkey’s expanded consulate in New York, across from the United Nations’ General Assembly building.
Ronald N. Levy (Sep. 18, 2013): The Persians took Cyprus from Egypt, and Alexander the Great took it from Persia. Wikipedia says Cyprus was settled by Greeks 2,000 years before Christ and it was subsequently occupied by Assyrians, then it was ruled by the Roman Empire, the French, the Venetians, three centuries of Ottoman (Turkish) control, then the British until independence in 1960.
One could argue that Alexander the Great wasn't great, that the United States are often in some ways not united, and that we had no right to take Texas and California from Mexico. When Napoleon "sold" to us in the Louisiana Purchase, does anyone really think that Napoleon owned the land, not the Indian who lived there and whose families had lived there for centuries? Or that Russia really owned Alaska, not the people living there, before we "bought" Alaska from the Czar? Or that Spain was the rightful owner of Florida, not Florida's residents?
Honestly, can anyone doubt that when Columbus "discovered" America on which a million--a MILLION--Indians ay have been living, and white men started appropriating the land, the land actually belonged to the Indians?
Many honest people can lay claim to land they no longer control but a reality is that both Greece and Turkey are our allies, Cyprus is at peace, people in the north prefer Turkey, the south prefers Greece, and I hope to God the island remains at peace.
Opi Ned (Sep. 18, 2013): In all disputes, there is the version of Party #1; the version of Party #2; and the truth.
Turkey "intervened" to save lives, and was the catalyst for an uneasy peace. Greece and its allies won the propaganda war.
It is time to stop the anger and distrust on the island; accept that neither culture can control the other; acknowledge the right of self-determination of the Turkish-Cypriots; and cooperate for mutual human and economic betterment.
Pauline Read (Sep. 18, 2013): Unbiased reporting here I see. The Turkish intervention is surely what you mean.
Bill Cobbett (Sep. 18, 2013): No amount of PR money can cover up the deaths of thousands and the dislocation of some 200,000 people in Cyprus in 1974.. There in the Turkish Land Grab for Cyprus is the basis of the still-birth of this ugly bastard child, this racist place called "trnc" ... a cover for Turkish Expansionism.
drCyprus (Sep. 17, 2013): @Ronald Levy: In the case of of the U.S and Mexico, both countries fought a war of independence against a foreign occupier. In the case of Cyprus a foreign nation(Turkey) invaded another country and seized part of its land and assets.
There are quite a few U.N. resolutions condemning the actions and crimes of Turkey -a foreign nation-, and supporting the embargo on the part of Cyprus occupied by the foreign Turkish army.
The so called TRNC is a foreign creation on Republic of Cyprus soil.
@Philip Hannan: I take it you are just some ill-informed foreigner. It's been 40 years since the Turkish invasion happened and the CIA and BSS articles on the events that led to 1974 are available for everyone to read. Please educate yourself before spewing bullshit.
@Anonymous: Ottoman/Turkish claims on Cyprus ended in 1923 when the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland(back then) fully annexed Cyprus and pronounced it a colony of the crown.
philip hannan (Sep. 17, 2013): Drcyprus....... I take it that you are in fact a deluded greek cypriot. Read the history and you will find that greece instigated all that happened in 74 and for years before that....... turkey put an end to the genocide. ...... how ignorant you are!!!!
Ronald N. Levy (Sep. 17, 2013): Calling the Turkish part of Cyprus "occupied" Cyprus is like calling the U.S., Canada and Mexico
"occupied" since England used to be in charge of America and Canada, and Spain controlled Mexico.
Married people have a right to get divorced, corporations have a right to split up, executives and teams in PR firms, law firms and accounting firms have a right to go elsewhere, you can see from our Declaration of Independence that countries certainly have a right to independence, and the people of Cyprus have a right to feel alliance with Greece if in the south and alliance with Turkey if in the north.
There are wars, thank God wars are settled, and when the countries involved in a war agree on peace terms, it's not a crazy idea to believe that the countries that made peace are better able than others to judge where boundaries should be and what's fair .
Either side in an international disagreement has a right to go to the U.N, the International Court of Justice and elsewhere, so if neither Greece nor southern Cyprus is going to court, perhaps we should
recognize that the people of Cyprus, Greece and Turkey may know better than other people what's fair and where boundaries should be.
Anonymous (Sep. 17, 2013): Great news. It is about time that other countries started to recognise that North Cyprus does in fact exist.
drCyprus (Sep. 17, 2013): "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus"
You must mean the part of the Republic of Cyprus illegally occupied by Turkey.
