Lifestyle retailer Brookstone is leaning on Epiq Strategic Communications for PR counsel amid today's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing with plans to sell itself to Spencer Spirit Holdings, parent of the Spencer's retail chain.
Spencer will pay $147M for Merrimack, N.H.-based Brookstone, the staple of malls known for selling unique gadgets and tools.
Jennifer Mercer, senior VP who heads Epiq's strategic communications operation, is advising Brookstone. Mercer, who joined the bankruptcy and turnaround specialist Epiq last year to start its PR operation, is a communications veteran of Hitachi Data Systems and BMC Group.

ICR works with Spencer Spirit Holdings. Managing director John Rileau is handling PR on the Brookstone deal for Spencer, which operates 644 Spencer's stores and more than a thousand "pop-up" stores for Halloween around the country.
Brookstone has 240 stores in the US.
