No less than TV star Jon Stewart took to the airwaves a couple of nights ago to make a point about how we can finally feel sorry for Palestinians.

Let's take another look at that. Is there a living human being with any sense of humanity who would not feel sorry for Palestinians, including Israelis?

Of course there are humans who would not feel sorry for them: they are the roots of the current situation in which on going political and other disagreements did not require similar combat.

The Hamas bunch that houses its rockets and other combat paraphernalia among the innocents knew they could reap some propaganda benefits when Israelis would finally say "enough is enough" about the rockets being rained down on their own civilian neighborhoods, with loud threats still more would be funneled through tunnels leading from Gaza into Israeli towns.

Strangely, or perhaps not, with Palestinian casualties rising to the hundreds, the media and politicians have somehow forgotten the estimated 200,000 Syrian men, women and children slaughtered by the Assad henchmen and the more than a million similar innocents driven into exile.

Even the many who've fallen victim to Vladimir Putin's upheaval in Ukraine have fallen off the front pages and might have stayed there had not some criminal operation not shot down a Malaysian passenger aircraft and taken the lives of 295 passengers and crew.

But the Israeli decision to stop the Hamas rockets by going after the criminals at great human cost on both sides has assumed just about the same level of concern as all the rest of those previously mentioned.

Why is that?

Certainly no one can for a moment believe there is anything less than tragedy in the effects of any conflict. There were seldom more than a few bulletin blips on TV or in the printed media about the daily Hamas rockets on Israeli neighborhoods. What seems to find greater message is that Israel refuses to accept these assaults. Would anyone else accept them without response?

So for Jon Stewart, certainly one of my personal television favorites, please, if you presume to restate the realities of such tragic situations as the current Gaza chapter of what has been going on for many years, use your powerful media access to achieve some modicum of balance as well as your own version of who suffers more and how.

Jewish mothers cry for their sons and daughters the same as Palestinians and would prefer neither had to mourn.
