fareed zakariaFareed Zakaria, ten-year columnist at Newsweek and editor of its international edition, will become a contributing editor at The Atlantic, its web edition, and sister Quartz online publication in September.

He'll be active in AtlanticLive events and Quartz's "The Next Billion: A Connected World" conference slated for New York in November.

David Bradley, owner of Atlantic Media, said the new hire is "one of those wonderful high-water marks in the Atlantic's 157-year-old history."

He speculated in a statement that Atlantic founders Longfellow, Emerson and Holmes would have "welcomed Fareed enthusiastically and then worry about raising their own game."

Zakaria has interviewed President Obama, UK's David Cameron, Dalai Lama, Russia's Dmitry Medvedev and Libya's Gaddafi.

He hosted "Fareed Zakaria GPS" on CBS, wrote a column for the Washington Post and served as editor-at-large for Time.

Zakaria is the author of "The Post American World" and "The Future of Freedom."
