zelda williamsTwitter said it is cracking down on violations of its terms of use and re-examining policies after Robin Williams' daughter, Zelda, quit the microblogging service over abusive and obscene remarks directed at her in the wake of her father's death.

Del Harvey, VP of trust and safety for Twitter, released a statement that said the company would not tolerate "abuse of this nature."

Harvey said the company suspended a number of accounts and is in the process of evaluating how its policies can be improved to handle tragic situations like Williams' death. "This includes expanding our policies regarding self-harm and private information, and improving support for family members of deceased users," she said.

Zelda Williams said she was deleting Twitter and Instagram from her devices on Aug. 12 after earlier decrying "cruel and unnecessary" messages directed at her on social media. That included Photoshopped images of her father's body and messages blaming her for Williams' suicide.

The Washington Post called the incident "another demonstration of the Internet's bottomless lows – and of Twitter's still-uncontrolled abuse problems."
