FTI Consulting reported strategic communications revenue rose 7.5% to $46.6M in the third quarter 2014 on increased assignments in North America and Asia Pacific.

Overall, the Washington-based consulting operation saw Q3 revenues climb 8.8% to $451.2M with net income of $22.5M.

President and CEO Steven Gunby said strategic communications and economic consulting showed continued progress, while its technology (+21.8% to $62.4M) and forensic and litigation consulting (+7.7% to $121.7M) units saw very high demand from major clients.

FTI said EBITDA margins increased 14.2% to $6.6M in its communications operation on a mix of more profitable project work and reductions in overhead and headcount. FTI has 549 revenue-generating staffers in its strategic communications division.

Gunby said a decline in pass-through revenues in strategic communications led to the decrease in revenue from Q2 to Q3 ($53.3M to $46.6M).

During the quarter, it handled cupcake chain Crumbs' bankruptcy PR, aided Shire in its pursuit by Abbvie, and worked the $1.4B sale of Berlin Packaging, among other engagements.

Through the first three quarters of 2014, FTI's PR operation is up 2.6% to $143M.
