On December 3, the White House hosted a Tribal Nations Conference at which, presumably, Native-American tribal nations gathered to discuss their concerns with the president, cabinet officials and the White House Council on Native American Affairs.

I say presumably, because when President Obama spoke at a newser connected to the conference, the blue-and-white backdrop, which was supposed to read like this:

THE WHITE HOUSE

TRIBAL NATIONS CONFERENCE

Was in a tight shot that read like this:

THE WHITE

TRIBAL NATIONS

It was bizarre, especially considering the unrest that is abroad in the nation as I write this. I was watching “ABC World News Tonight” on a 32-inch screen, so the format wasn’t unusually truncated.

During the course of my career, I have been cautioned by news photographers and camera operators about unseemly or unflattering backdrops. I always appreciated their suggestions, and worked to remain vigilant about optics. The White House should do no less.
