Jason Zillo, executive director of communications and media relations for the New York Yankees, has won Major League Baseball's top PR honor for 2014.

zilloMLB said Zillo earned the Robert O. Fishel Award for Public Relations Excellence after baseball officials and members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America voted on nominees from all 30 teams.

Zillo has been the high-profile team's main spokesman since 2007, including the 2009 opening of a new Yankee Stadium and World Series championship that year.

While 2014 was a down year for the Yankees in the standings, Zillo guided PR for the retirement of Derek Jeter, following the 2013 exit of another Yankees legend, Mariano Rivera.

Zillo, who also created the team's acclaimed HOPE Week community relations effort, has logged 19 seasons with the Yankees, joining the team after internships with the Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons of the NBA.

Tim Helvy, senior director of baseball information for the Seattle Mariners, won last year's Fishel Award, which is named after the former PR exec for the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Browns, Yankees and the American League.
