Sony Pictures Entertainment has reversed course and said today it will release "The Interview" in a limited number of theaters on Christmas, days after the company faced criticism for pulling the plug on the controversial film.

interviewSony CEO Michael Lynton, who spent the week defending his company in several interviews, said in a statement today that the studio has never given up on releasing the firm. "We are proud to make it available to the public and to have stood up to those who attempted to suppress free speech," he said.

Deadline reported that the reversal came after a Sony conference call with distribution executives.

Lynton said Sony hops it is only the "first step of the film's release."

"We have never given up on releasing The Interview and we’re excited our movie will be in a number of theaters on Christmas Day," said Lynton. "At the same time, we are continuing our efforts to secure more platforms and more theaters so that this movie reaches the largest possible audience."

The change was cheered by the White House, which was critical of Sony's initial decision to pull the film, and The Interview stars Seth Rogen and James Franco.
