James Wood has joined The Internet Society as senior director/strategic communications & media relations, a new post.

He will handle internal and external communications with the goal to amplify the global voice of the organization that works to keep the `Net open and more transparent.

Kathy Brown, president of TIS, said Wood "will play a crucial role in building a greater understanding of the current challenges facing the Internet and in reinforcing the global multi-stakeholder approach as the way to solve them."

Wood joins the group from technology firm AxiCom, which is headquartered in London.

He handled AxiCom's broadcast, content creators, video and delivery chain clients such as NDS (now part of Cisco), Nokia mobile phones (acquired by Microsoft), Panasonic, Pace and TDK.

Wood is based in Geneva.
