Jim Webb, the former Virginia Democratic Senator and Navy Secretary mulling a run for the White House in 2016, has hired political journalist Craig Crawford as communications director for his exploratory committee.

Webb, a respected military veteran and writer, announced the hire on Twitter Jan. 2 with the hashtag #webb2016.

Crawford has covered Washington since 1989, including stints as DC bureau chief for the Orlando Sentinel, columnist for Congressional Quarterly and later CQ Roll Call, and editor-in-chief of The Hotline. He started his career as a products liability attorney in Florida.

Crawford also announced the move on his blog: "I’ve crossed over. Why? Because I know and respect Jim Webb as someone who will wake up every morning trying to find a better life for working people and small business owners who've been hammered by economic elites — and forgotten by both parties."

Crawford's husband, David Blank, is deputy communications director for the Alliance for Retired Americans.
