GOOGLE INVESTS IN JOURNALISM IN EUROPE

Google will spend more than $160M in grants for journalistic ventures in Europe to curry favor with regulators on the Continent.

The search giant will partner with newspapers and reporter organizations to develop new products and revenue streams.

Google has been at odds with European newspapers about the use of their content on Google News.

Carlo D'Asaro Biondo, who in charge of strategic partnership, said though Google made "mistakes" in the part, it always wanted to support the European newspaper business.

NBC, AOL DIAL UP CONTENT DEAL

NBCUniversal and AOL have partnered in a content and programming venture.

They will work jointly to create programming to run on their separate platforms, while AOL will feature NBC, Telemundo and CNC content on its network.

Bob Lord, president of AOL, said the effort is designed to shatter the silos between linear and digital content.

HOWE DELIVERS RELIEF TO PEARSON

Laura Howe, a 14-year veteran of the American Red Cross is joining Pearson May 4 as VP-media and communities for North America.

Her job is to communicate how the publisher improves the lives of members of the education community.

Howe is VP-PR for the American Red Cross, which has faced a withering attack for its lackluster response to Super Storm Sandy.

WASHINGTON EXAMINER BULKS UP

The Washington Examiner is adding a trio of political savvy editors/reporters to bulk up its coverage of the Presidential contest.

Jim Antle, who was managing editor of The Daily Caller, is taking the politics editor slot. He also worked at The American Spectator and The American Conservative. Antle wrote "Devouring Freedom: Can Big Government Ever Be Stopped."

Daniel Allott will start as WE's deputy commentary page editor. He has contributed to Investor's Business Daily's leaders and success page and wrote for American Values, a DC public policy shop.

National Review's Ryan Lovelace will become political reporter at WE. As William F. Buckley Jr. fellow in political journalism, he covered the Dept. of Homeland Security, immigration and the Ferguson riots.
