Jack King, who was NASA's public affairs chief and voice of the Apollo moon shots, died June 11 at a hospice near the Kennedy Space Center. He was 84.

jack kingHe's remembered for doing the count down for the historic July 16 1969 launch of Apollo 11, which resulted in Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin becoming the first and second man to on the moon.

King began his career in 1951 at the AP office in his hometown of Boston.

He opened the Cape Canaveral outpost in 1958 and moved to NASA to head the PA office for the Mercury program. He also handled Gemini launches.

King, who had move to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, left the agency to handle PR for the US Energy Research and Development Administration.

He joined Occidental Petroleum in 1977, stepping down in 1996 and after a brief retirement he became spokesperson for the United Space Alliance venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

He left USA in 2010 for a second retirement.
