Sorry, Mr. Huey -- there certainly was a conspiracy. But it was on the GOP side, when they leaked selected e-mails even though they had all the e-mails.
Okay, so all of the e-mails have been turned over and it's official: There's no there there. No conspiracy, no coverup, just a bureaucratic cock-up between two agencies. Ambassador Stevens twice turned down offers of additional military security. The embassy was mostly a CIA spook house, and a natural target.
So, Hillary hasn't even announced yet and the GOP is so terrified of her that they are Swiftboating her.
Let's say the State Department wasn't absolutely on top of the situation in Benghazi, and that mistakes were made. That would be what--about the millionth time since the State Department was formed?
I would like to know why the military wouldn't send in Special Forces from Tripoli, but otherwise it is time to close the books on this sorry incident.
Of all the crap that need not have happened, this is it! As a longtime Hillary fan and supporter who agrees staunchly with Arthur here, the whole bunch have screwed up from top to bottom. It is just as gutsy and credible to look the nation in the eye and say we messed up and have no excuses. It's fascinating that the many of the same probing Republicans who were around when Reagan sent 240 Marines to their death in Lebanon in 1983 never raised their voices then. While that reality does not excuse the current screwup, it does suggest either a measure of partisan convenient amnesia or less than sincere concerns for those killed and otherwise assaulted in Benghazi.
I predict Benghazi will have zero effect on Hillary Clinton's chances in the 2016 presidential race. The only people who really care about this story are the Fox News-driven right wingers who made up their minds about Hillary a long time ago. They wouldn't vote for Sec. Clinton if she were the last candidate on earth.
Kevin -- But it is a statement we wouldn't want any of our clients in a similar situation to make.
Fraser --When choosing someone to represent the U.S., I'd rather have Hillary on her worst day than Rick Lazio on his best day.
The White House, as well as State, screwed up on this from the start. It consistenty tried to duck, dodge and deny a cruel fact: our response time in a true emergency was disgusting. Hillary botched it by not seking the true facts from the start, but the president owed it to the country to consider a prompt presence of ready to rumble forces. I have been in an embassy when a mob threatened to te storm it. The presence of marines trained for such duty made all the difference, I am sure.
Fraser, this is the biggest non-scandal since Whitewater, kept alive by Fox and the far right media. She was right. What difference did it make who killed the Americans? They were still dead. That was her point however clumsily stated.
