NY Times piece on Kentucky clerk Kim DavisIsn't it plainly wrong for county clerks to refuse issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples?

A Kentucky clerk is the latest in a string of southern bureaucrats to refuse granting licenses to gay couples because it would violate her religious beliefs.

Her solution: ban signing marriage licenses for homosexuals and heterosexuals.

Kim Davis, an Apostolic Christian, yesterday refused to grant licenses to two same-sex couples because she acted under "God's authority." Really? Maybe God inspired the couple to get married.

Clerk Davis violated an order by a federal judge to issue licenses, a ruling upheld by an Appeals Court.

She has every right to believe in whatever she wants to believe. However, the US Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex couples throughout the land have the civil right to marry.

Who is Davis to decide that her personal belief takes precedence over the civil rights of same-sex couples and others who want to get married in Rowan County?

The people of the Bluegrass State pay Davis to carry out the responsibilities of county clerk, a job that includes granting marriage licenses.

She has no right to re-invent the role and functions of a Rowan County clerk.

If Davis objects to carrying out the responsibilities of county clerk, she should quit.

What's next?

Will Dept. of Motor Vehicles clerks decide to ban driving licenses to people because of age or appearance?

Will county clerks withhold certificates of divorce due to their religious belief in the sanctity of marriage?

So you wonder how Davis feels about that? Davis, who has been married four times, obviously doesn't think God approves of divorce.
