Elisabeth BumillerThe New York Times has named Washington editor Elisabeth Bumiller as DC bureau chief, replacing Carolyn Ryan, who will focus on covering the political campaigns.

Dean Baquet, executive editor, praised Bumiller's "proven leadership" that she demonstrated during her months as editor.

"Elisabeth comes to the job with broad experience working overseas, writing books and covering the life of Washington as a Post style writer," wrote Baquet in a memo. "With her commanding knowledge and spirit, I am confident she will guide our stellar Washington bureau."

He noted Bumiller and Ryan will soon make announcements about adding reporters and editing changes.
