Mike LupicaIn the latest round of job cuts at the Daily News, the newspaper’s sports department got particularly banged up. Sports columnist and Pulitzer prize winner Mile Lupica, who has been with the News nearly 40 years, on Sept. 16 was let go after failing to renew his contact, according to Politico. Longtime baseball columnist Bill Madden was laid off, as well. Ditto for sportswriting mainstays Filip Bondy and Hank Gola.

Daily News owner and real estate magnate Mort Zuckerman apparently is looking to scrub some large salaries from the payroll after recently giving up his efforts to sell the product.

The ongoing editorial erosion at the News does no favors for PR pros, who now will have fewer reporters and columnists to pitch.

Letting Lupica go means the newspaper probably will be less of destination among consumers because there are plenty of people who simply got the daily to read Lupica’s latest musings.

In addition to several sportswriters, other staff members were laid off, including Ellen Tumposky, an editor, and Bill Hammond, a columnist and editorial board member.

We’ll have to see whether the job cuts help the News’ efforts to stay afloat amid the ongoing decline in print media advertising. The newspaper is said to be losing $20 million a year. The paper’s editor in chief, Colin Myler, resigned last week to return to London.
