MSNBCFox News Channel catapulted to the top of the cable heap by deploying a fairly efficient business model: talk radio on TV. But the formula works, as both CNN and MSNBC have been chasing Fox News’ ratings for years. Now MSNBC is looking to zig to Fox’s zag.

NBC News announced a series of programming changes for its MSNBC cable unit focused on hard news and the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The changes signal yet another departure from the left-leaning commentary and opinion that, till now, has defined MSNBC.

NBC News said Kate Snow, an NBC News national correspondent, will anchor news coverage at MSNBC from 3 to 5 p.m. during the week and anchor the Sunday edition of “NBC Nightly News.”

Chuck Todd, moderator of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” will host a new daily show at 5 p.m. called “MTP Daily” starting Sept. 28.

The upcoming changes coincide with the return of Brian Williams, who ultimately lost his job as NBC News anchor after it was revealed that misled the public about his war coverage in Iraq.

Williams returns on Tuesday, Sept. 22, in his new role as anchor of breaking news and special reports at MSNBC. He’ll cover Pope Francis’s arrival in Washington for his U.S. visit.

MSNBC’s departure from opinion and commentary will alter the landscape at MSNBC for PR pitches, as well. There’s likely to be less opportunity for “soft” pitches concerning lifestyle, entertainment and gadgetry, but additional opportunities for agencies that traffic in public affairs, reputation management and crisis communications.

As part of the programming changes, MSNBC also cancelled some shows, including “The Cycle,” “Now With Alex Wagner,” and “The Ed Show.”
