Mike LupicaPerhaps the powers that be at the Daily News have had a change of heart concerning Mike Lupica, the Pulitzer prize-winning sportswriter and Daily News columnist who was last week was said to be out the door after nearly 40 years at the newspaper. But it appears as if Lupica may not be going anywhere.

Numerous media reports said that Lupica and several of his colleagues, including Bill Madden and Filip Bondy, were being let go. The sticking point for Lupica: a contractual issue. However, said news reports may have spurred new contract negotiations between Lupica and the newspaper, according to CNNMoney.

Writing in his column yesterday, Lupica seemed to suggest that he is not going anywhere. “Friends of mine, some of the best I have ever had in the newspaper business and some of the best people with whom I have ever worked—and with whom I will ever work—left the Daily News this past week.”

He added, “I will miss them mightily, because they were all part of the beating heart of this place, for a long time.”

There was no goodbye and good luck, or references to some of his most popular columns during his tenure.

The News continues to look for cost-cutting measures, as circulation declines and advertisers migrate their ad budgets to online venues.
