FMC CEO Jaci Clement with WABC-TV's N.J. BurkettFair Media Council’s annual “Connection Day” Oct. 23 drew more than 500 PR people, reporters and editors to the Bethpage, Long Island, campus of Briarcliffe College.

Nearly 100 speakers including more than 50 reporters and editors appeared on panels that lasted the entire day. The more than 30 sponsors included NBC, CBS and Fox News and local colleges, hospitals and service firms.

Panelists at the breakfast session expressed concern about the purchase of Cablevision/Newsday/news12.com by the French company Altice that is scheduled to take effect sometime next year.

Reporters on panels said media should cooperate in conducting investigations.

Bruce Lambert of the New York Times and Bob Keeler of Newsday called for more “long form journalism” during one of the panels.

Afternoon sessions were devoted to skills training for PR people in crisis management, personal branding and social media.

Jaci Clement, FMI executive director, said “Connection Day” again proved that PR people and reporters are interested in building personal relationships.
