Human Rights CampaignThe Human Rights Campaign, the Washington, D.C.-based lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights and political lobbying organization, has appointed Jay Brown to the role of communications director.

Brown, who currently serves as HRC’s director of research and public education, was previously director of integrated marketing at nonprofit literacy organization Reading Is Fundamental. Prior to that he was director of marketing for web communications at Carnegie Mellon University.

Brown initially worked at HRC between 2000 to 2006, where he was communication strategies director.

As communications director, Brown will serve as an organizational spokesperson and lead a team responsible for advocating for LGBT equality in the media.

Brown begins his new role on April 25.

HRC, which is the largest LGBT advocacy group in the nation, was founded in 1980. HRC also named Liz Halloran deputy communications director. Halloran had previously been communications manager of HRC’s HRC Foundation since 2014.
