Longtime political journalist Reid Wilson, a former online reporter for The Hill, has returned to that Washington, D.C. mainstay, where he will now cover state politics.

Wilson makes his returning debut on Friday.

Wilson, who wrote for The Hill between 2008 and 2009, was most recently chief political correspondent for digital politics and policy outlet The Morning Consult, which he joined in 2015. Prior to that, he covered national politics for The Washington Post, where served as editor and was also lead author of that publication’s political tipsheet, “Read In.” He was also previously editor-in-chief of National Journal-owned campaign and elections tipsheet, “Hotline,” and worked as an associate editor and writer for news and political commentary site RealClearPolitics. He’s made regular appearances on CNN, MSNBC, NPR, C-SPAN and PBS’s “NewsHour.”

In an internal memo to staff, The Hill’s editor-in-chief Bob Cusack wrote that Wilson's new state political beat signals “yet another expansion of our political coverage.” Cusack said the beltway publication has “decided to focus more on hot political issues at the state level because more than ever, federal and state politics have become intertwined.”

The news comes soon after the Capitol Hill political tabloid also announced a forthcoming opinion section, to be edited by former Mashable executive editor and chief content officer Jim Roberts.
