A few weeks ago on this website I wrote a column about what I would doif I was Hillary Clinton’s PR advisor.

Speaking in North Carolina on Thursday night (8/18/16), Mr. Trump said, “Sometimes in the heat of debate and speaking on a multitude of issues, … you don't choose the right words or you say the wrong thing. I have done that.”

As someone whose first PR job was in a political PR firm, working on local, statewide and national campaigns, my ears perked up when I heard Mr. Trump’s statement.

Why he said it I understand. But I think it was a mistake.

It reminds people of all the statements that got him into trouble with voters.

More important, it plays right into the Clinton campaign message, also echoed by some Republicans, that Trump is emotionally unfit to be president.

If I was an advisor to the Clinton campaign, here’s what I would suggest:

An ad campaign using Trump’s words against him, saying that Trump admitted he is emotionally unfit to be president by saying, “Sometime in the heat of debate you don't choose the right words or you say the wrong thing. I have done that.”

A voice over might say something like, “Does the United States want a president who can’t keep his cool even under less than difficult circumstances?

Donald Trump. Emotionally unfit to be president.
