As House Majority Whip Steve Scalise remains in critical condition following yesterday’s rampage at an Alexandria baseball diamond, the National Rifle Assn. posts a “How the Left Incites Violence, Then Spins It Into Justification for More Gun Control” piece on its website.

The gun group has no shame.

In the wake of the horrific shooting, Democrat and Republican joined together in a rare show of unity. Kudos to them.

How The Left Incites Violence, Then Spins It Into Justification For More Control

The politicians denounced the “hateful” tone in political rhetoric. They raised calls for civility and putting an end to the anger and personal attacks in politics that gets played out in social media and the 24/7 news cycle.

President Trump hit the right tone, saying:

“We may have our differences, but we do well, in times like these, to remember that everyone who serves in our nation’s capital is here because, above all, they love our country.

“We can all agree that we are blessed to be Americans, that our children deserve to grow up in a nation of safety and peace, and that we are strongest when we are unified and when we work together for the common good.”

House Speaker Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi denounced the attack.

The NRA sees things differently. It posted the following today on its website:

“People on the left responded immediately by blaming the victim for a violent crime that was carried out by a left-wing zealot,” wrote AWR Hawkins, Second Amendment columnist for Breitbart News. “The left’s reaction is the result of a complete abandonment of decency.”

To Hawkins, the left has been captured by ideologues. “Trump haters push protests past the limit of decency, with media fanning the hateful flames. People like Kathy Griffin and those who produce New York Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park Series, whose goal is to divide the country, then use the division to their political benefit.

“Such division births animosity, which grows into hatred that can erupt into the kind of violence we saw when 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson opened fire on the GOP lawmakers.”

And finally, “The left has created a climate in which violence is imminent: the divisions they foster and maintain to be elected to office—or to preserve their Hollywood and media fiefdoms—are coming back to haunt us in real time. Shame on them for exploiting the very violence their ideology births, for seeking to spin a heinous crime into another gun control law.”

Say what? The NRA apparently missed yesterday’s call for unity and the end of heated rhetoric. It is doing the spinning here.
