President Trump is speaking today at the Suffolk County Community College, Brentwood, L.I., on the topic of the “MS-13 Street Gang,” which has been criticized by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
He will be at the Van Nostrand Theatre on the campus at about 1:30 P.M. at an event not open to the public. The speech will be live-streamed. He will be speaking to an audience that will be limited to “invited members of law enforcement, select elected officials, and the media, with all invitations being handled by the White House,” according to a press release from the college.
Sessions has said MS-13 is “a group of murderers, traffickers and thugs.”
Security on the campus will be tight today, school officials have said. Trump is arriving on Air Force One at MacArthur Airport.
The bodies of four young men who had been murdered was discovered in April in Central Islip Park. MS-13 is thought to be behind the murders. The gang is suspected of 17 murders in the past 18 months.
New York Rep. Peter King said it is “a priority of the Trump Administration to destroy and crush MS-13.” Sessions visited Long Island in late April.
While there is expected to be a turnout of Long Islanders supporting the president’s campaign against the gang, a group of protestors, representing such groups as Make the Road New York and Long Island Activists, have said they plan to stage a protest against Trump in Brentwood Park, which is across the street from Suffolk County Community College.
Jeffrey Nesbit, who served as communications director for former vice president Dan Quayle, is named assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services.
Kate Bedingfield, White House communications director, will exit at the end of the month. Ben LaBolt, a longtime Biden adviser, will take the CD post.
Cathy Cochran, senior VP in Teneo’s Washington office, has rejoined the US Dept of Agriculture as director in its communications office.
Mexico is working with the DC-based Global Action on Gun Violence to push for “impactful gun violence prevention strategies” in the US.
Douglas Farrar, who was VP-communications and strategy at the Carnegie Center for International Peace, has joined the Federal Trade Commission as PA director.
