Michael Scherer, Washington bureau chief for Time magazine, will join the Washington Post as national political reporter on Sept. 5.

He will report on the Trump administration and how it is changing Washington, and play a leading role in covering the 2018 midterm and 2020 presidential elections, according to a joint memo from Scott Wilson, WaPo national editor, and Steven Ginsberg, senior politics editor.

Scherer joined Time in 2007 as campaign reporter covering Republicans, and assumed the DC helm in 2013. He wrote more than 20 cover stories including the 2012 (Barack Obama) and 2016 (Donald Trump) person of the year features.

Before Time, Scherer was Washington correspondent for Salon.com and then Mother Jones.

He also served as assistant editor at Columbia Journalism Review and began his career as a reporter for the Daily Hampshire Gazette (Northampton, MA).
