"We've got a shooting at Shelby Center."
Those were the words spoken to University of Alabama Huntsville public affairs director Ray Garner on Feb. 12, when a seven-year professor, Amy Bishop, allegedly opened fire during a biology department meeting and killed three colleagues while wounding three others.
"You don't expect a shooting incident on your campus," said Garner, in discussing crisis communications at at PR Council of Alabama event at the University of North Alabama. "You hear about them in other places."
Garner, who was told that the shooter was a university professor by a photographer for the Huntsville Times as he walked to the scene ("I had just found out we had a shooting and here the media is telling me who the shooter is"), gives a tick-tock of the day and talks about handling crisis communications, refuting erroneous information being reported, setting up a media access point, how the school's policies have changed, and other aspects of the event in the 21-minute clip.
