With all respect to Iowa, home of “Field of Dreams” and Le Mars – better known as the Ice Cream Capital of the World – one would have expected that voters would have made up their minds by now.
That is plainly not the case. National Public Radio, for instance, had a feature today in which a woman told the correspondent that she is still scratching her head. John Edwards was her initial choice, but she then fell under the spell of Hillary Clinton. After a brief flirtation with Barack Obama, the indecisive voter believes she will caucus this evening for Edwards. Or maybe, she won’t. Another told how she and hubby talked it over at the dinner table last night and came to the conclusion that they could support any of the Democratic candidates. Geez. It's show time.
One thing is certain. Voters in upcoming primaries won’t have that same range of choice because guys like Bill Richardson (you should have been a contender), Joe Biden (future Secretary of State) and Chris Dodd aren’t going to be on the campaign trail much longer.
What are the headlines tomorrow? Take it to the bank that Barack edges Hillary. The media long knives then go to work carving up her top advisor and Burson-Marsteller CEO Mark Penn. The pollster, however, is a big boy who claims to work best under pressure. Penn gets his wish.
On the GOP side, Mitt regains his footing and tops the banjo-strumming Huck. Romney then gears up to wage combat against “9-11 Rudy” in an all-out effort to prove who is the toughest hombre in town.
Giuliani has just enlisted slain Pakistan politico Benazir Bhutto for his campaign. Her image is featured in Rudy’s latest ad to scare the country to death about the threat posed from terrorism.
It’s a pretty shameful piece. My bet is that if Bhutto had lived in Des Moines she would be in Hillary’s corner tonight.
