"Our reputation has been damaged lately by these recalls," Debrowski told [Chinese product safety chief Li Changjiang] in a meeting at Li's office at which reporters were allowed to be present.
"And Mattel takes full responsibility for these recalls and apologizes personally to you, the Chinese people, and all of our customers who received the toys," Debrowski said.
More than half of Mattel's products are made in China.
Robert Eckert, chairman and CEO of Mattel, gave his own mea culpa before Congress on Wednesday in outlining new safety procedures and checks that the company is implementing. In the company's PR statement issued after that appearance, the word China only appears once, toward the end of the press release in noting Eckert would travel to China to inspect the implementation of Mattel's new safety procedures.
