Malkin is deeply disturbed by the scarf because — to her — it looks like a keffiyeh. According to Malkin’s blog, the keffiyeh is the "traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad." The scarf was "popularized by Yasser Arafat and is a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage taking videos.”Note to Malkin: the keffiyeh is a regular adornment of half the guys walking the streets in the Arab section of Brooklyn near to where I live. Should they all be rounded up on terror charges?
Malkin’s rant is offensive and the gutless wonders at Dunkin’ Donuts should have told her to take a hike.
Instead, Dunkin’ caved. Margie Myers, senior VP-communications, explained in a statement that Ray is not wearing a keffiyeh. It is a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design that was selected by a stylist for the advertising shoot. The chain, however, has dropped the ad because the “possibility of misperception detracted from its original intention to promote our iced coffee.”
If I was running a DD store in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon or Pakistan right now, I’d be looking to shift to Starbucks.
Malkin may have bigger fish to fry. How about that notorious terror-supporter and proud keffiyeh wearer Meghan McCain, daughter of the Republican Presidential candidate?
Malkin notes that Meghan “really ought to know better given that her dad positions himself as the candidate best equipped to ‘confront the transcendent challenge of our time: the threat of radical Islamic terrorism.”’
I don’t think John McCain was referring to a keffiyeh.
