Iran should welcome an aerial strike of its nuclear facilities by Israel. That sounds pretty bizarre. But to Benny Morris, a Professor at Ben-Gurion University, the alternative is even more horrible. An Israeli Air Force attack on Iran is a foregone conclusion, according to Morris’ hard-hitting op-ed piece prominently featured in today’s New York Times. He even gives the best time to strike. That would be from Nov. 5 to Jan. 19, giving the West six-months of diplomacy to get Iran to end its nuclear bomb quest and “ensure that Israel will have support from a lame-duck White House.”

Israel’s leadership knows an Iranian bomb in the hands of the mad mullahs threatens the very existence of Israel. They firmly believe the Jewish State is morally obligated to take out Iranian facilities before a Tehran bomb becomes a reality.

If Israel takes no action or fails to destroy the nuke facilities, Morris believes a Middle East nuclear holocaust is certain. The result: millions incinerated, collapse of the globe’s oil-based economy and radioactive pollution spoiling the earth’s atmosphere and water.

The Professor of Middle Eastern History urges Iran’s officials to suspend the nuclear program. “Bar this, the best they could hope for is that Israel’s conventional air assault will destroy their facilities. To be sure, this would mean thousands of Iranian casualties and international humiliation. But the alternative is an Iran turned into a nuclear wasteland,” he wrote.

Morris believes the U.S. will not participate in the air strike because “the American public has little enthusiasm for wars in the Islamic lands.” The 170K American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan and the 202K mostly U.S. contractors are Iran’s new “hostages.” They are sure to be missile targets by a desperate Iran eager to lash out before its fate is sealed.

Let’s hope the decision of the stubborn Bush Administration to finally talk with Iranian officials is a sign that the White House fully understands the reality of the threat posed by nuclear armed Iran to Israel and Americans in the region.

By showcasing Morris’ piece, Times may prod the White House, which does not even want to admit a new policy of negotiation with a charter member of the “axis of evil,” to step up its diplomatic effort. The President needs to give Henry Kissinger a call.

Time is running out. Kudos to the Times.
