“Baghdad Bob,” the former Iraqi Minister of Information, dished out some memorable quotes in the aftermath of the U.S. capture of his city.

After American troops seized the airport, Bob declared, “We butchered the force present at the airport. There are no Americans there.” Following the bombing of the Information Ministry--which meant Bob had to brief the press on the street--he said the Iraqi Army has killed most of the infidels and will “finish off the rest soon.”

Bob disappeared from the scene on April 8, '03, a day before he predicted the U.S. invasion will end in failure. The jury is still out on that one. “Quagmire” might have been a better word.

The spirit of Bob has reappeared in the guise of Russian General Vyacheslav Borisov, commander of the forces that bombed the Georgia city of Gori, a shelling that triggered a mass exodus. Borisov denied reporters entry into the stricken city because their presence would disturb the sleeping citizens, according to today’s Wall Street Journal. What a guy!

Borisov, who is riding around in a Mercedes with Georgia license plates, denied any looting took place. “We came here simply to restore order, And now it is secure here—see, I can drive around unarmed.” Nice car indeed, Bob.

The good general blamed any chaos on the Georgian Army, which “just ran away,” leaving “thousands of American-made assault rifles.” Borisov promised the Russians will redeploy soon. A bad sign: the signal for the Georgian mobile phone network has disappeared from Gori. It has been replaced by a Russian company with the message, “Enjoy Your Stay.”

A BBC reporter says he heard a series of blasts around Gori today. Those poor people just aren’t getting enough sleep.
