Steve Schmidt doesn’t like the New York Times. Fair enough. A lot of people don’t like the NYT. Schmidt though really, really doesn’t like the NYT because he is John McCain’s senior campaign advisor and a product of the Karl Rove School of Political Consulting.

Schmidt accuses the Times of being “in the tank” for Barack Obama. The paper, to Schmidt, is “not by any standard a journalistic organization. It is a pro-Obama advocacy organization that every day impugns the McCain campaign, attacks Sen. McCain, and attacks Gov. Palin” while giving Obama a pass, according to Schmidt.

Schmidt is the guy who is credited with bringing discipline to the McCain campaign. He did that, in part, by cutting off the media’s access to McCain. The boys on the bus don’t get the same face time with McCain that they once enjoyed. McCain hasn’t had a news conference since mid-August.

Schmidt scores two points by attacking the Times. He fires up the Republican base that already views the NYT as the anti-christ. Schmidt also deflects any criticism from McCain’s role in the Wall Street meltdown. The Arizona Senator, as much as anybody on Capitol Hill, helped trash the regulations that kept the financial industry in check.

Schmidt (pictured) really, really, really doesn’t like the Times because it is covering the campaign, not sidetracked on the trail by lipstick on a pitbull/pig detours. The Times has outed lies of the McCain campaign such as the whopper about Palin’s opposition to the infamous Bridge to Nowhere. She only bailed out when political opposition to the Bridge reached a boiling point. Palin did accept the more than $220M in federal earmarks that was supposed to go for the span. Isn’t Palin supposed to have said if Alaskans wanted a bridge, they would pay for one?

The Times nailed McCain for the false charge that Obama is going to raise everybody taxes. The Democrat has said those earning more than $250K a-year are going to see their taxes rise. And never mind the fib about Obama itching to provide sex education classes to kindergarten kids.

Schmidt really, really, really, really doesn’t like the NYT because it has reported the truth, which always hurts when one is trying to run away for it.

More importantly, the NYT has shown how McCain has junked his “maverick” personality and sold his soul for a last chance shot at the White House.
