Conservatives, media types and activists are playing with fire, pushing the line that the Presidential election is in the bag for Barack Obama. This blogger dismisses such talk but nonsense. Never mind singing, the proverbial Fat Lady hasn’t even stepped out on the stage.

Writing it today’s New York Times, David Brooks warns of a dark future due to Democrats in charge of the White House and comfortably in control of both House and Senate. He predicts spending-crazed Democrats creating even more economic havoc.

John Harris, editor-in-chief of The Politico, told students at St. Lawrence University that Barack Obama will enjoy an “Electoral College blowout” to make him the most powerful President since George Bush post 9/11 and Lyndon Johnson following his election in 1964. That's pretty good for a freshman Senator. “Republicans are on the verge of a route that could leave them virtually powerless in Washington. The era of trench warfare between the parties might be over,” Harris said.

The people at MoveOn.org’s political action committee have just launched “Operation Landslide.” They are buoyed by poll numbers going Obama’s way, and see the election as a “once-in-a-generation, history-changing election.”

Obama is certainly sitting pretty with a ten-point lead in some polls, but as Donald Rumsfeld once said, "Stuff happens."

Remember the 1968 election when Richard Nixon had a 15 point lead over Hubert Humphrey in the polls following the Democratic Convention in Chicago. Then-Vice President Humphrey lagged due to his support for the Vietnam War. HHH turned against the war and rebounded in the polls to close in on Nixon. HHH lost to Nixon by a 43.4 percent to 42.7 percent margin with Wallace getting the rest of the votes. All HHH needed was another day or two and the White House was his.

If McCain drops his current “angry man” routine for the “happy warrior” stance of HHH, Obama could be in for the fight of his life.
