The genius talking heads at Fox News say Barack Obama is hogging the airwaves these days because he is prepping for a job as talk show host in four years. That’s a low blow.

Eight years, perhaps.

Obama has been charged with cheapening the Office of the President with his rapid fire appearances on Jay Leno, ESPN and “60 Minutes” leading up to last night’s presser, which he nailed.

The esteemed Fraser Seitel suggested on Fox that Obama “lay low” after his press conference, leaving the explaining of the financial plan to others in his Administration. He is confident that Secretary of Treasury Geithner will finally get it.

Those criticizing Obama’s overall media strategy are stuck in a time warp. The days of the mighty Washington press corps, dominated by the Big Three Networks and newspapers like the Washington Post, New York Times and Wall Street Journal are dead and almost buried.

A sharp observer of the proceedings last night would have noticed that Black Enterprise editor-in-chief Derek Dingle was seated in “Broadcasters’ Row.” He sat next to NBC/MSNBC heavyweight Chuck Todd.

Obama’s time in office coincides with the crumbling of the old media. News today is received without the “filter” of the D.C. press corps. Millions receive news via the new filter of a Leno, Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert. It makes all the sense in the world for the President to appear in venues that attract the most ears and eyeballs.

The President plans an online town hall-style meeting about the economy on the White House’s website tomorrow. In the “Open for Questions” program, Obama will answer the most popular questions as voted by visitors to the site.

So far, more than 15,800 people have submitted nearly 6,000 questions. My favorite: As majority owner of AIG, why can’t the U.S. develop universal healthcare coverage for the uninsured?

There is another about Obama’s missing birth certificate.

Via technology, Obama has restored the White House as the People’s House in the mold of Andrew Jackson. That’s all well and good but a word of caution goes to our new President. Old Hickory had to flee the White House via the back door after an unruly crowd of supporters mobbed the place following his Inauguration. The crowd only left after it was tricked to go outside after White House stewards put vats of whisky-laced tubs of orange juice on the south lawn. The stewards locked the doors after the last celebrant left.

Just in case, the Obama White House needs to have a couple of giant vats and liquor cabinets fully stocked.
