Could it have been the rockets' red glare during the past patriotic weekend, or a round of introspection following the death of Michael Jackson. One only wonders.
Shockingly, the gang at Rupert Murdoch’s U.S. flagship (no hard feelings intended for the magnificent New York Post) suggest — no, demand — that Republicans come up with a plan to dig the beloved country out of the deep hole that it finds in after eight years of Bush II. Or as straight-talking Vice President Joe Biden artfully put on ABC’s This Week: “There was a misreading of just how bad an economy we inherited.” In other works, the $780B economic stimulas package is chump change compared to what the U.S. needs to emerge from the Bush carnage.
In today's wonderful piece called “The Palin Puzzle,” Journal editorialists call on Republicans to never again put forth on the national stage somebody as unqualified as the soon to be exiting Alaska Governor.
They wrote the following gem:
“Ronald Reagan changed the national debate, and for three decades Republicans have been able to utter bromides about ‘liberals’ and ‘big government;' and get away with it. After the financial meltdown and long recession those days are over. The GOP nominee in 2012 will need an explanation for how we got into this mess that goes beyond mimicking Democrats about ‘Wall Street’ greed,’ as well as an agenda for how to restore U.S. prosperity. President Obama will take credit for any recovery, however sluggish, and Republicans will need more than a critical riff about spending and budget deficits.”

Hats off to the WSJ editorial squad for finally coming to their senses. The Palin Puzzle masterpiece is their Declaration of Independence from brain-dead Republican politics. My guess is that Journal editorial writers have begun to pay attention to the weekly WSJ column of house liberal Thomas Frank, author of one of my favorite books.
Frank’s “The Wrecking Crew” is the bible for anyone who wants to know the rules of the conservative playbook. That is: gut government, privatize regulatory oversight to executives from regulated companies and their lobbyists and then blame government for “not working.”
Then play it over and over again.
The WSJ wants a much better book for GOP. Let's call it "The Building Crew."
