More than seven in 10 Americans would prefer to spend Thanksgiving at a resort or hotel, according to a poll at hideaways.com. Another sixteen percent would rather stay home.
The ever-resourceful Mike Thiel, founder of the Hideaways travel club, has the perfect solution. He recommends a grand compromise: invite the whole family to a resort, preferably one in the Hideaways portfolio. That way, the whole family can watch all the football they want on the big screen, enjoy a feast cooked by the hotel staff and then ditch each other at bedtime. Another new twist on Thanksgiving: the 100-proof turkey.
O’Casey’s Tavern in Manhattan claims that it will unveil the country’s first bird infused with peach, raspberry, cherry and apple flavored vodka on Thursday.
Paul Hurley, owner of the midtown watering hole, says there will an ounce of vodka in every bite. Those who fret that most of the alcohol will evaporate during the cooking of the bird -- fear not. Hurley’s kitchen is adding plenty of vodka to the cooked gravy. The helpful bar suggests that vodka martinis go nicely with the meal.
O’Casey’s says more than 125 people have signed up for the dinner. That tab includes a free taxi cab ride home to anywhere in Manhattan. No one under 21 will be allowed to participate in the New York City feast.
This blogger’s tradition includes dinner at home with extended family. This year’s line-up includes my daughter’s new friend from college and her mother. Perhaps next year, my family will take Thiel's advice and hit the road. One thing for sure: you won’t find us in O’Casey’s on Thanksgiving Day.
